What is Carton Flow
Carton flow is a form of shelving that uses a gravity feed. Each shelf is loaded from the rear. As items are picked from the front all the remaining items roll forwards ensuring another item is immediately ready to pick. Each unit consists of one or more lanes, sometimes with dividers.
With carton flow stock remains organized. Picking is simply and easy. Stock will be picked on a first-in - first-out basis. It is simple to see when inventory is getting low as all products can be seen.
The benefits from carton flow are seen in both the replenishing and picking operations. Lanes are replenished from bulk storage en mass from the rear of the lane. Pickers at the front of the lane save immense time simply as travel time is reduced - sometimes overall labour savings are reported to be in the order of 75%.
Replenishment and picking are done from separate sides of the carton flow, so each operation is independent of the other with no interference.
There are variations available to suit differing picking heights, picking methods and the item type stored.
